
Project Progress Picking Up Pace
The Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang is showing steady progress, with land acquisition works for the first two major segments now actively underway. Authorities confirm that implementation is moving in stages as part of ongoing efforts to deliver one of Malaysia’s key public transport infrastructure projects.
Land Acquisition Moving Forward
For Segment One, which covers the alignment from Permatang Damar Laut to Macallum, dozens of private land lots have already gone through land hearing processes under the Land Acquisition Act 1960. Compensation payments have also been partially completed, while additional legal procedures and site handovers continue to be carried out in phases.
Segment Two, which stretches from Macallum to Penang Sentral, is also progressing with identified land lots undergoing approval and gazettement processes before construction activities can expand further.
Early Works Already Underway
According to transport authorities, early construction activities have already begun in areas where land has been secured. Engineering design work is also progressing in parallel, ensuring that project timelines remain on track as different stages of development move simultaneously.
Visible infrastructure work, including viaduct pillars and preliminary structures, is already appearing along parts of the alignment, signalling physical progress on the ground.
Public Support and Project Scope
Public consultation for the Mutiara Line has received strong response, with a large majority of feedback supporting the project. The LRT line will span approximately 29.5km with around 20 stations, connecting key areas across Penang Island and the mainland.
Once completed, the line will significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time between the island and mainland, supporting both daily commuters and economic activity.
